Once a legal permanent resident has been a resident and actually physically in the USA for a certain amount of time, he she may be eligible to apply for naturalization.  Most residents usually must wait at least five years to apply, but there are exceptions.

Citizenship gives parents the option of applying for USA citizenship for children born abroad.  Time is of the essence.  It is better to apply while the children are young. Parents may also apply for citizenship for their children adopted abroad.
